The Lumberjack Women's Basketball team won a non-conference thriller Wednesday night over the University of Jamestown JV team 76-73.
The teams traded baskets throughout the first quarter with each team knocking down four three pointers apiece. After one quarter the Jimmies led by a score of 23-18. Both teams struggled to score over the first five and half minutes of the second quarter. Over the final four and a half minutes however the Jack heated up knocking down 6 3-pointers, including a Kenya Poitra corner three that just beat the buzzer, enroute to a 18-3 run to finish the half. The Jacks would take a 40-31 lead into the locker room.
The Jacks offense struggled to get going after the break and found themselves tied with the Jimmies at 45-45 at the midway point of the third quarter. Out of the media timeout UJ would retake the lead. With three and a half minutes left Poitra would break the Jacks cold streak and tie the game back up with a jumper in the lane. Moments later Jersey Vogel knocked down one of her 4 3-pointers to put the Jacks back in front. Serinity Soland scored 7 straight points for the Jacks over the final 90 seconds of the quarter to give them a narrow 57-54 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
The teams exchanged baskets in the opening minute of the half to create a 60-60 tie. A 7-0 Lumberjack run over the next two minutes forced a Jamestown timeout. After the timeout the Jacks were able to push the lead to 10 at the halfway point of the final quarter. The Jimmies didn't go away though as they inched back into the game. A 3-pointer with three minutes to go saw the Jacks lead get cut to 74-71. The next minute half both teams were held scoreless. A pair of Jimmie free throws would see the DCB lead cut to just one with 90 seconds remaining. The Jacks failed to score on their ensuing possession but got the stop they need on the defensive end of the floor. The Jacks burned a lot of clock on their next possession but were unable to score, giving Jamestown the ball with just 25 seconds left trailing by one. The Jimmies would get a good three-point look, but it didn't fall. The ball would go out bounds giving the ball to the Jacks. Ava Gourd would get fouled on the inbound play and go to the free throw line where the Jacks are ranked 3rd as a team in all NJCAA DII as they shoot nearly 78%. Gourd was able to make both free throws putting DCB up 76-73 with 6.7 seconds remaining. A desperation three form the Jimmies was short sealing the win for the Jacks.
Vogel led four Lumberjacks in double figures with 17 she also had 10 assists for a double-double. Brooke Anderson dropped in 16 points off the bench including 4 3-pointers. Poitra and Soland each finished with 11 points, Soland pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double.
DCB improves to 3-15 overall on the season. The Jacks host Mon-Dak and Region 13 foe United Tribes Technical College Monday night with tip-off set for 5:30p.m. from "The Woodshed."
