It came down to the last out around 4:00pm Saturday afternoon at Tommy Turtle Park. With freshman pinch-runner Summer DarcAngelo standing on second base, and with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, tied 3-3, freshman RF SkyLyn Karonis stepped to the plate. Karonis was 0 for 3 in her previous three trips to the plate against NDSCS pitcher Brooke Harder. Karonis lined a shot to deep left-center field and watched as DarcAngelo scored the series clinching run to send the Ladyjacks to the Region 13 North Playoffs beginning Thursday May 16th in Minnesota.
The Ladjacks began the weekend Friday by defeating NDSCS 13-9 in the opening game of the best of three. They then dropped the second game friday by a score of 11-7 setting the stage for a third game thriller.
Th Ladjacks were down 1-0 going to the fifth inning before freshman 2B Ladaija Fitzgerald hit a two-run homerun to put the Ladyjacks up 2-1. A double in the 6th inning by freshman catcher Claire Hiebert scored another run sending DCB to the 7th up 3-1. NDSCS wouldn't give up and tied the game in their half of the seventh inning. With two out and the threat of extra innings on the horizon Karonis came up with her biggest hit of the season.
The Ladyjacks will face Central Lakes, Northland and another as yet unnamed team in the four team double-elimination tournament beginning Thursday. Monday's double-header between Central Lakes and Northland will determine who hosts the tournament.
